Hey guys, Sammi here! Last night was my 2 year anniversary so I kind of was a bit distracted. Here is an awesome page for you. I was pretty happy with it when I wrote the script, and I feel like Pete has really captured the essence of the two characters very well
Because I need to practice drawing her. And because I’m sure some folk want to see more of her.
When I’m drawing her regularly, Dom is easy. Anyone who has seen my work outside of Valentine’s Dei has probably noticed that I tend to draw petite, athletic females. So Dom comes naturally. I don’t recall having ever discussed it, so I don’t know if Sammi initially designed Dom’s appearance with the intention of playing to my artistic strengths, but based on Sammi’s description I (for my part) definitely designed Dom to be someone I’d want to draw. And thankfully that hasn’t changed.
Plus, I can empathise with Dom’s sullenness, and her need to do things on her own. (I think that’s common to most illustrators; most of the time we want the rest of the world to just fuck off and leave us in peace.) So emoting Ms. Valentine is second nature to me.
Belle, on the other hand, is a whole different kettle of fish. Tall and voluptuous is not my forte. Nor is extraverted. So much of the time I really struggle with her.
Dom and Belle are pretty much chalk and cheese. I imagine Sammi intentionally designed them that way; it’s a great dynamic. But I think drawing them (or any character, I suppose) is kind of like method acting. The problem is that I’m constantly jumping from one headspace to another. I can sum up the chasm between Dom and Belle with their hands. Belle’s hands are long and elegant, feminine, well manicured. Dom’s are short, rough, more masculine. Jeez, think of the pummelling they’ve already taken, and given, in the first four chapters. Again, Dom’s hands are easy; because they look much like mine, and mine are right in font of me when I draw her. But suddenly switching headspace to draw those long, elegant, refined fingers… not so easy. So, I need practice.
Hmmm. Maybe next time Sammi will think twice before she tells me to talk more…
